Scorpio: Myths and Truths That Will Transform Your Perspective
Scorpio season is here (according to tropical astrology)! And for most people that comes with a flinch, an ouch, a tensing — What is waiting for me? What’s coming? What can I expect?
Scorpio is associated with intensity — a kind of in your face, holding, bearing, closing in on the flame. Scoprio is ruled by Pluto; Hades’ planet. These energies represent things we like to view at a distance including our own secrets. Yet, Scorpio returns to us to remind us that we must wrestle with our fears lest “fear be used either against the children or against ourselves. The knowledge of fear can help make us free.” Audre Lorde, Man Child.
Astrology has become subject to popular agendas, masticating it to its most simple ideas. Scorpio has long been the embodiment of those that are misunderstood; the angry, the repressed, the woman, the child, the black, the brown… Are you surprised? Probably not, as it is inherent for Scorpio energy to be misinterpreted and those with lots of scorpio in their chart often feel misunderstood as well.
I have strong Pluto and Scorpio placements in my chart and most of my life I have felt the sting of being other, rejected, not welcome in the popular crowd or even any crowd. Finding “my people” has felt like a lonely, cold, road and those I have found along the way are also people with loud plutonian or scorpion energy.

We are the people who feel alien from our family, like we trigger other people, that we identify with the villain in the movie, like we are deeply misunderstood and subject to other people’s projections like we feel that people sense a darkness in us we wish they didn’t. At the same time we may also feel like the fly in the web. The spider loves us. As long as we do not leave the web, stay alive, and allow the spider to suck our life force.
Pluto + Scorpio are associated with hellish things; murder, violence, pain, torture, power + manipulation. As a country, we are deeply preoccupied with violence and power dynamics. Our most popular tv shows, podcasts, and books are murder mystery. And our favorite people celebrities. Pluto’s hell scape energy hangs heavy over our heads like a guillotine. Thus we have assumed that the only layer or element to Pluto + Scorpio is the one we have been accustomed to; spooky, witchy, monstrous, scary… Even popular astrology apps re-impregnate this idea into our heads. An app I like sent me an email about Scorpio season and it started with this; “Dust off your vampire teeth, Maleficent horns, and black lipstick. This is the time of the year when we shed the costumes of everyday living and bring our shadow selves out to play.”
When you really get to know Scorpio you realize a key to your own heart. Scorpio’s true essence is tenderness. However, the process to become tender is intense. Grief is intense. Heartbreak is intense. Abandonment is intense. Love is intense. Trauma is intense. But the result, the intended result, is softness. To be as tender and loving as our heart can hold.
But we have projected the process (intensity) onto the subject (scorpio) and avoided the wisdom of scorpio with a flinch because; “owie, I don’t want to be tender or soft!” - says the ego! But our soul is aching for the deep, authentic, connections and purpose driven work. Our soul is calling from the deep please, please, please make me tender! Let me surrender. Let me long. Let me ache. Let me feel.
For those who avoid their soul’s eros to merge with the universal edge of all sensations, they rip their hair out trying to get away from it. Their minds are online and their bodies are offline. Overthinking, over-consuming, overworking, overanxious trying to run, run, run away from it all. They turn towards other intensities they can handle; drugs, sex, a hard workout, an intense mental or physical performance. These people want to have their walls up. They want to be hard, tough, strong, they wither at the idea of becoming emotionally in touch or scoff at healing.
I’ve seen people who boast as shamans show this off by revealing their sexuality, or show pictures of them screaming in the woods as if this represents scorpio’s energy… This isn’t inaccurate but it is only a few inches deep as this scorpion energy accessed through the lens of someone obsessed with the violence of nature or self-harm. To be intense I must be angry, mean, and crudely sexual. Right?
Like massage we don’t need a Thai body session to open us to our most intense experiences. Sometimes a gentle, lulling, brooding touch is all we need to open to the vastness of tender heartbreak rippling through our cellular makeup, to still our beating heart, and sit at our own lake.
Scorpio season is about letting yourself become tender and soft. Scorpio is Taurus’s fraternal twin so the energy frequencies are only subtly different. If you dig Taurus’ energy there is no reason to be afraid of what might be in store for you this season. The work here is about learning to open your heart to what is breaking it rather than turning away from it.
Crying when you feel the pain of being smaller than someone. Not being good enough. Rejection. Hurt.
Screaming and pounding the earth with rage at atrocity, genocide, rape, murder, devilish-ness.
Emerging and slithering with the eros of sensuality in the divine mother… calling on your beloved to embrace you.
Dancing in the cosmic realms where you no longer are and there no longer is.
These are intense experiences because Scorpio like Taurus is inherently somatic. You are probably very good at staying in the mental body; coming up with ideas, writing, talking, examining, continuing on when you are tired. Being in the body is a new experience for us — especially as Americans —and intense. Thus many of us avoid it for both its novelty and intensity. We mistake the experience (the hurt, the rejection) for the body’s wrongness, badness and shame the body into staying still.
This avoidance is self-injuring as we continue to deny ourselves our own body. Our body our enemy. The intensity of being alive; our enemy. If we can see our selves with the loving kindness, all of our parts, the ones we love, the ones we despise, our ability to actually come into right relationship with self opens us and we become magnetic, attractive, wise, embodied. This relationship we are denying can holds great mystic wisdom.
To be tender, is to be Scorpion. To let your heart break, to grieve, to reveal in the intense wave of bodily experience as something dies inside of you that is intense. And may you welcome your soft animal body to it. Something is ready to let go, shed, and integrate this season. What will you offer as sacrifice?
